Writing Desk Advice for the Home

Finding space for a study desk in your home can be a challenging undertaking. Let’s review some of the top concerns you should have and then address how to remedy them.

The first question you should ask is what type of desk are you after? You need to narrow your choice from a number of options. For example, you can choose from different styles of computer or office writing desks, antique writing desks, and french writing desks. Your selection hinges on whether you’re after functionality, style, theme, or a combination thereof.

If the answer is purely dependent on functionality, I recommend going for a light computer writing desk with metal trim. These studies are typically compact, small, and light which allows them to fit into a corner of your room whether you live in an apartment, dorm, or house. These desks have a high-tech presence and complement well with your laptop. The downside is you won’t gain many shelves or storage for books and papers.

Those searching for antique desks are probably after the perfect piece to their living room to compliment other furniture. I recommend an off-white or cream colored finish to help establish the age and accentuate trim. When you’re going purely for looks and atmosphere, place a special emphasis on dulled but smooth colors as well as curved wood.

Obviously in efforts to combine the best of both worlds, you’re looking for style and usability. I recommend you look at the OfficeMax Lighthouse Writing Desk. Colors are country white with the desk top brown. This will easily blend into most relaxed rooms while the pull-out drawer with an antique brass knob provides storage for papers and pens you may want to keep. A leather arm chair will go beautifully with the Lighthouse desk.

Another student desk I absolutely love is the Realspace Soho Shaftsbury Avenue Writing Desk With Hutch And Stool from Office Depot. This has a pull-out surface for your keyboard and an upper deck with small drawers for items such as pens, staples, and tape. Also included is a matching stool for quick comfort if you stop to write something down quickly. However, I do recommend a chair with a back as you won’t be allowed to relax using the stool alone. The desk hutch gives concealed storage.

Last, I wanted to mention one of the more unusual and expensive pieces from Thomas J. Ptacek. This handcrafted desk costs $5,000 and features natural grain and graphic patterns of reclaimed wood.
